How to learn AI video:
free vs paid courses

You can learn AI video for free from the makers' own prompt guides (Google, Kling, ByteDance) and Runway Academy's free courses, practising on Google Flow's 50 free credits a day. Paid courses mostly sell structure, feedback and community: Curious Refuge charges $749 a course or $149 a month on an annual membership, and a 5.9k-member Skool group charges $7 a month.

Can you learn AI video for free?

Yes. The people who build the models publish the most useful lessons, and they cost nothing. What free learning lacks is structure and someone to critique your work.

For practice, Google Flow gives 50 credits a day without a subscription (Google). That is enough for a few short clips daily, and unused credits do not roll over, so a little every day beats a weekend binge.

Our guide to prompts for Seedance, Veo and Kling puts the three makers’ advice side by side.

What do paid AI filmmaking courses cost?

Paid optionPriceWhat you get, per the seller
Curious Refuge membership$149 a month on an annual plan paid at once; $199 month to monthAll its courses, workshops, events, one consultant call a month
Curious Refuge single course$7494 weeks of video modules, 12 months of updates, weekly homework critiques
Ai Filmmaking on Skool$7 a monthA 5.9k-member group; the page says the price will rise

Read the membership terms closely. Curious Refuge’s FAQ says the $149 membership “is an annual subscription, intended to be paid at once”, and offers month-to-month at $199.

Is a paid AI video course worth it?

Opinions in one Reddit thread about Curious Refuge split cleanly, and each is one person’s view.

  • One student found it worth it for the “weekly workshops with really interesting people” and the Discord, but added: “If you just want to learn something specific and technical, then stick with the YouTube videos”, and called the model documentation “super useful”.
  • Another, taking the filmmaking course, wrote: “I feel their current charge of $700 is Highway robbery.” The course page now lists $749.
  • A third said you will “get better courses for free on YouTube”.

The one student who rated it well talks about workshops, the Discord, connections and “a bit more structure”, and sends people who want technical skills to YouTube and the model documentation.

A four-week free plan

  1. Week 1: one clip a day. Use Flow’s daily credits. Copy one example prompt from Google’s guide, then change one element at a time: camera, light, action.
  2. Week 2: read the three prompt guides. Rewrite the same idea in each maker’s structure and compare.
  3. Week 3: one character across five shots. Build a character sheet and reuse it as a reference; our consistent character guide covers how each tool does it.
  4. Week 4: a 30 to 60 second short. Plan the shots, chain them and add sound. Then show it to people who will tell you what is wrong with it.

That last step is the one free courses lack. The Scene Makers Beginners group on WhatsApp is free and open to anyone learning AI video, with no follower count needed, and members trade feedback and prompts there.

How we checked this

We read the course and membership pages of Curious Refuge and the Skool group, Runway Academy's course list, Kling's Quickstart page, the Google, Kling and ByteDance prompt guides and Google Flow's credit page, all on 29 October 2026. Prices are the sellers' own published prices; we did not buy the courses. The opinions on whether a course is worth it come from one Reddit thread, and each is one person's view. Two posters there quote about $700 for a course; the course page now says $749. If something has changed, tell us on WhatsApp and we will update this page.
