Does YouTube monetize AI videos?
Yes, if each video is original. YouTube’s monetisation policies do not ban AI. They say your content should “Not be mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative.”
The same page lists AI uses that can earn: “using AI to visualize a unique character and narrative you invented”, and “using AI to edit your video scripts or generate a unique background visual for your content”.
What cannot earn, in YouTube’s words: “AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production without adding the creator’s original, authentic insights or perspective”.
What do YouTube’s rules say about AI?
Four sections of the policy page decide most AI channels. All four apply to Shorts, long videos and live streams.
| Section on YouTube’s page | What YouTube says | What it means for an AI channel |
|---|---|---|
| Generic or repetitive content | “the substance of each video should be materially varied” | A series is fine if each episode has its own story or focus |
| Unsatisfying or off-putting content | Not allowed: “videos that stitch together unrelated or inconsistent AI clips to surprise or shock viewers” | Random AI clip reels are out |
| Reused content | Channels that “repurpose content that’s already on YouTube or another online source without adding significant original commentary” | Applies “even if you have permission” |
| AI personas related to sensitive topics | Not allowed: “An AI “doctor” providing medical diagnoses” | No AI expert hosts on health, law, money or politics |
On 15 July 2025 YouTube renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content”, to make clear it covers content that is “repetitive or mass-produced”. YouTube called this a minor update: such content “has always been ineligible for monetization”.
Reviewers do not watch everything. YouTube says they “may focus on” your channel’s main theme, most viewed videos, newest videos, the videos with the “Biggest proportion of watch time”, your titles, thumbnails and descriptions, and your About section.
How many subscribers do you need to monetize?
It depends on what you want to earn. For a share of ad and Premium revenue, the Partner Programme page gives two routes:
- 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or
- 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Watch hours from the Shorts feed do not count towards the 4,000. After you apply, YouTube says a decision comes “typically in about 1 month”.
You can join earlier in countries with the expanded programme, India, the US and the UK among them. It asks for 500 subscribers and 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, plus 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. That tier gives “earlier access to fan funding and Shopping features”, such as channel memberships, not ad revenue.
From 1 February 2027 the ad revenue bar rises for new applicants. YouTube’s blog of 10 August 2026 says they “will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days”, and that “The entry thresholds for our Fan Funding and shopping products remain unchanged.” The new entry bar does not affect channels already in the programme, but only channels with 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days will share in Shorts revenue. To keep fully monetising, the eligibility page says partners must accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by 31 January 2027.
Do you have to label AI videos to get paid?
Labelling is a separate rule. Realistic AI content must be disclosed when you upload, and YouTube says disclosing “alone won’t limit a video’s audience or impact its eligibility to earn money”. Our guide to the YouTube AI label quotes when it applies.
What happens to AI channels in practice?
Approval is possible, but it is slow and hard to predict. These are individual reports from one Reddit community, not a survey.
- Rejected after a long wait. One creator makes 40 to 60 minute AI thriller films and reported “around 222,000 views and about 36,000 hours of watch time” in 28 days. On 8 October 2026 they wrote: “After 70 days of waiting I got rejected with unsatisfying or off-putting content”.
- Approved, then removed. Another runs an original AI series with recurring characters and was approved. Two days after posting an episode with political parody characters, they received a notice for posting “for shock value”. They appealed, and YouTube upheld the decision. They estimated that week’s earnings at “like $20”.
- Small but steady. An AI 80s music channel owner in the first thread: “I get $100 every couple months passively”.
- Ads are not the business. A creator who builds an AI tool says of ad income, “from ads, basically nothing”, and that “the people actually doing well with AI channels are selling something”.
How do you give an AI channel the best chance?
Work from the policy, not from forum tips.
- Make every video different in substance: its own story, research or argument. Same intro and outro is fine, YouTube says, if “the bulk of your content is different”.
- Build series, not templates. YouTube allows “a series following a set of characters across episodes” when each episode has “a distinct storyline”.
- Write and research it yourself. The AI helps you make it; the idea, script and judgement are yours.
- Avoid the named failures: image slideshows, scrolling text, stitched random clips, repeated shock scenarios and AI expert personas.
- Keep your working files. If you are rejected, the appeal page asks you to “Show how your content was edited”. Prompts, raw generations and edit timelines are your evidence.
- Check your top videos before applying, since YouTube says reviewers “may focus on” your most viewed and newest videos.

Can a fully AI-generated YouTube channel be monetized?
Yes, in principle. YouTube's policy lists "using AI to visualize a unique character and narrative you invented" as allowed. What it refuses is templated, mass-produced AI content without the creator's own insight. In practice approvals are uneven: one creator with original AI films waited 70 days and was rejected.
Does YouTube demonetize AI voiceovers?
The policy does not ban AI voices. It targets what the video is: image slideshows or scrolling text "with minimal or no narrative, commentary, or educational value" are not eligible, whatever the voice.
How long does YouTube take to review an AI channel for monetization?
YouTube says a decision comes "typically in about 1 month", and that channels may need several reviews when reviewers disagree. One creator with an AI film channel reports waiting 70 days.
Will labelling my video as AI stop it earning?
No. YouTube says disclosing AI content alone "won't limit a video's audience or impact its eligibility to earn money". Creators who consistently choose not to disclose may face penalties, including suspension from the Partner Programme, YouTube says.
What changes for YouTube monetization in 2027?
From 1 February 2027, new applicants need 8,000 watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days to share in ad and Premium revenue, and only channels with 10 million Shorts views in 90 days share in Shorts revenue. The fan funding and Shopping thresholds stay the same, and channels already in the programme are not affected by the new entry bar.
How we checked this
We read YouTube's channel monetisation policies, the Partner Programme eligibility page, the expanded Partner Programme page and the appeal page on YouTube Help on 29 October 2026, and YouTube's blog post of 10 August 2026 on the 2027 changes. Every rule on this page is quoted from those pages. What happened to AI channels comes from Reddit threads in r/aitubers from July to October 2026; each is one person's own report, not an audit, and we could not see their channels. YouTube's rules change often, so check the policy page itself before you apply. If something has changed, tell us on WhatsApp and we will update this page.
